eSIM Not Working? 9 Common Problems and How to Fix Them
Start Here: 30-Second Checklist
Work through these in order before anything else:
- ✅ Is Data Roaming ON for the eSIM line?
- ✅ Is the eSIM set as your mobile data line?
- ✅ Is the eSIM line turned on (not just installed)?
- ✅ Have you arrived at your destination? Most plans only activate on landing.
- ✅ Try toggling Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds, then off.
- ✅ Still nothing? Do a full restart.
The 9 Most Common eSIM Problems & Fixes
1. Data Roaming Is Off — The Big One
Your travel eSIM rides on a local partner network, which your phone counts as roaming. You must turn Data Roaming ON for the eSIM line. This does not cause roaming charges — your plan is prepaid. Only your home SIM can incur roaming fees (so turn roaming off on that one).
🧑💻 Samsung: Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → select eSIM → Data Roaming ON
🟢 Pixel: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → tap eSIM → Roaming ON
2. Wrong Line Selected for Data
Your phone may still be routing mobile data through your home SIM. Set the eSIM as the active data line.
🧑💻 Android: SIM Manager / SIMs → Mobile Data → select the eSIM
3. eSIM Is Installed But Switched Off
An installed eSIM profile is not the same as an active one. Open your SIM or line settings and toggle the eSIM on.
4. You Tried to Use It Before Landing
Most travel eSIMs stay dormant until they detect a network in the destination country — and the validity clock starts on first connection. If you're still at home, that's expected behavior. Install on Wi-Fi before you fly, but don't expect data until you land.
5. iPhone Is Quietly Falling Back to Your Home SIM
iPhones have a setting called Allow Cellular Data Switching that lets the device jump back to the home SIM if the eSIM signal drops. Turn it off to keep your phone on the eSIM data line.
6. No Signal / Wrong Network Selected
If Data Roaming is on but you still have no bars, force a manual network search. Disable automatic network selection and pick a partner network by hand.
🧑💻 Android: Settings → Mobile Networks → Network Operators → Search Manually
7. APN Not Configured
Most eSIMs auto-configure the APN. If yours didn't, enter the APN details from your Roamable confirmation email under the eSIM's Access Point Names settings.
8. QR Code Already Used or Installed on Another Device
An eSIM QR code can normally only be scanned once. If you previously installed it on a different phone, or deleted the profile and tried to reinstall it, the code may be expired. Contact Roamable support before deleting your eSIM profile — we can issue a fresh QR code.
9. It Just Needs a Restart
Boring, but effective. A full power cycle clears a surprising number of activation hiccups. Do this after confirming roaming and data-line settings — not instead of them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my eSIM say "No Service" abroad?
Almost always because Data Roaming is off on the eSIM line. Turn it on for that line only. It won't cause roaming charges on a prepaid travel eSIM.
Do I need to turn Data Roaming on? Won't that cost money?
Yes, you need it on for the travel eSIM line — and no, it won't cost extra. The data is prepaid. Only your home SIM's plan can rack up roaming fees, so keep roaming off on that line.
My eSIM installed fine but there's no data. Is it broken?
Usually not. In order: confirm the eSIM is enabled, set as the data line, Data Roaming is on, and you've arrived at your destination country. That sequence resolves 95% of cases.
Can I fix my eSIM without Wi-Fi?
Yes — changing roaming and data-line settings doesn't require Wi-Fi. You only need Wi-Fi to install a new eSIM profile from a QR code.
My eSIM worked yesterday but stopped today. What happened?
Check if your data allowance has run out. Also try toggling Airplane Mode and restarting. If you've crossed into a new country that isn't covered by your plan, you'll need to purchase a new eSIM for that region.
If you've confirmed roaming is on, the eSIM is your data line, and you're in the destination country — reach out to Roamable support with your order details and we'll check the activation status on our end.
